Johnson County Community College
1. Call to Order - The meeting was called to order at 7:11 pm.
2. Minutes - Minutes were discussed, Fran Lemery moved to accept and Tim Wagner seconded. Minutes were approved.
3. Moderator’s Report—Warren McAllen
Warren covered the items on the schedule to be discussed, including the Japanese Lang. Contest and the Midwest Forum.
4. Vice-Moderator’s Report—Carole Owsley
The October visit of Lee’s Summit Sister City of Aizu was announced.
5. Moderator Items—
a. Mike sent a message that the web site is being updated and each group may be asked to resubmit information.
b. Templates will be worked on for information cards for Japan Council.
c. There is now a logo contest for Japan Council to be completed by the end of March—simple and easy.
d. A company needs a translator for several months—a paid position—contact Warren.
6. Agenda Items—
a. Kurashiki Week—Fran Lemery
i. Guests arrive on July 25, 2007 and stay until July 31, 2007. There will be activities throughout the city during that time. Some of those include a Royals dinner and game; a Crown Center dinner; a rodeo and dinner at Benjamin Ranch; Starlight Theatre and dinner; and the Kansas Speedway. Volunteers and interpreters will be needed. Hosts will be needed for July 26 & 27 for some student home-stays.
ii. In March Nippon Travel have some of their people coming to Kansas City while a Kurashiki advance group is here—this is to cover items for the visit.
b. Ethnic Enrichment—Fran Lemery
i. The festival will be August 17, 18, & 19, 2007. There will be the booths and entertainment including a fashion show. There is an effort to get the Taiko drum group to perform.
c. Japan Festival—Andrew Tsubaki
The group is working on the budget for the festival to be held on Sept. 29 & 30, 2007. Volunteers are needed and Andrew passed out a volunteer list. They would like for each sister city to take turns inviting performers from their sister city to come each year. Fran & Andrew are wanting each of the Sister Cities to take turns bringing performers over.

The Independence Cherry Blossom Festival will be on Sunday, April 15, 2007. The time is 12:00—4:00pm at the Sermon Center on Noland Road in Independence. It was suggested that the GKCJC compile a list of Japanese Gardens in the Kansas City area. Get names and addresses to Connie.
b. Japanese Language Contest—Akemi Kubo
This will be held at Indian Creek Technology Center on Saturday, March 3, 2007. Fliers were passed out.
c. Kansas City Sister City—Tim Wagner
Tim announced that Kansas City will host a formal dinner in October to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Seville Sister City and the 35th Anniversary of Kurashiki Sister City relationships.
d. Midwest Forum—Warren McAllen
The Consulate is hosting the forum in Chicago on March 15, 2007, for the entire district. If you have an item you would like to have discussed let Warren know before that time.
e. Festivals
Masako Sato announced that KU is holding a festival sponsored by the student council on April 1, 2007. Yasuyuki Kurokami announced that K State is holding a festival on April 21, 2007.

St. Francis Xavier is hosting a Japan Festival Feb 11th for their church and is seeking interest, volunteers and ideas. We support these efforts and have created a webpage description on their behalf. St. Francis Xavier was a missionary for the Catholic Church and spent much time and was written about in Japan.
